"The Golden Rule"
In Luke chapter 6 verse 31, the Lord says "Do to others as you would have them do to you." Many like to refer to this scripture, or it's similar paraphrasing, as "The Golden Rule." Although we've heard it so many times, we often overlook it's overall meaning. Jesus didn't say "Do good only to those who are good to you" or "Do good to only the people that you like" When he said "Do unto OTHERS as you would have them do to you," He meant everyone. That being said, we ought to treat everyone with love and sincerity. For example, do you know the feeling when someone compliments you, or tells you that you did a good job at something, whether it be playing a sport, singing, or speaking in front of others? Or when someone tells you that you're beautiful/handsome and that they love you and are proud of you? Give others compliments as well and tell them these things. You may not even understand how easy it is to make someone's day, or put a smile on someone's face. Sometimes a simple compliment or encouragement could absolutely change someone's perspective and attitude. Knowing that someone sees you and cares for you is one of the most reassuring and wonderful feelings that one can have. It's nice to feel noticed and cared for. It feels so good to know that you've made someone's day a little bit brighter. A few weeks ago, I read a story about a homeless man and a young woman who went out of her way to help him. She took him out to lunch, and they had a wonderful chat --- a complete stranger to him. Afterwards, she bought him some food, gloves, toiletries, etc., and he slipped a note into her things right before she left. Later she realized that the note was there and she read it. It said something similar to, "Thank you for letting me know that someone cares. I was going to kill myself today, but you helped me realize that I'm worth it." You never know how a simple sweet phrase or action could impact someone's life. Be kind, and treat others how you want to be treated, and to go a step further, treat them with extra generosity and give them more than they need. In Matthew 5, verses 38-42, it says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”
Treat everyone you meet with unconditional love, generosity, and sincerity. It is our duty as the body of Christ. Be blessed.
